Oreo Cookie Jingle, AKA “Dare to Wonder” Song

December 31, 2015 by Tara Meddaugh Leave a Comment

Okay, so I’m being a dutiful fan, watching Project Runway online, because this is my Friday highlight (never can I watch live tv these days, even though, yes, I’m still paying Cablevision 14 some dollars a month to have 2 cold cable boxes)-when what to my wondering laptop should appear? But a wonder-filled jingle, a boon to my ear!

Yes, this is when I first heard that super catchy “Oreo Cookie Song.” Okay, I guess it’s really called “Dare to Wonder,” and it’s really the subtle voices of Tegan and Sara (identical twins from Canada who have been creating together for 2 decades). And it’s really trying to sell me on trying new limited-time flavors of oreo cookies…but man…it is one inspiring jingle.  Apparently, I’m not alone, as the youtube video alone has over 14 million views (well, the jingle has been out for over a year–how did I miss it until now?). Check it out:

So well done, Oreo. You might not get me to try one of your new flavors, because, well, the last time I bought Oreo cookies was probably when Tegan and Sara formed their band. But you will get me to actually listen to your ad and not mute the laptop when Lifetime makes me watch an extra 3 minutes of ads just because I had to refresh my page since the connection stopped working.

And you’ll probably get me to dance a little bit too.

And maybe crave cookies.

Oreo cookies.

Okay, so maybe it’s not impossible for this ad to have actually worked on me…Perhaps…But luckily I mostly shop at Trader Joe’s and they don’t have oreos there. Although it is only a few stores down from the Stop and Shop…so…

Lesson: Don’t shop when you’re hungry and have just seen Project Runway…

And for all of you who are wondering what those beautiful words of this beautiful jingle are–here are the lyrics to “Dare to Wonder,” or, “The Oreo Cookie Song.”

Dare to Wonder/The Oreo Cookie Song Lyrics:
Wonder if we tried a new thing, looked inside, see what we can bring
Forget who you’re supposed to be, take all your crazy flavors, show them all to me
If we dare to wonder about what holds us down, the fears, the doubts,
Could we spark something, watch it grow? Be more wonder-filled than we know.

Share your thoughts: What commercial jingle makes you put down your cell phone and watch/listen to it? Where were you when you first heard the ever-famous Oreo Cookie Song? Does having a good song make you more likely to take notice and buy the product? How do you feel about the musicians using their talent for advertisements?

Give Me That Filet o Fish

March 3, 2010 by Mike 2 Comments

Hey you “Give Me Back That Filet-o-fish” haters…the singing fish is back.

Easter’s close, which means McDonalds (and every other fast food chain) is promoting Lent-friendly food options to Christians everywhere.  Which also means one of my favorite all time ringtone-worthy commercial jingles, the filet o fish song, is back with a vengeance in a new commercial:

New Filet of Fish Video:

Kia Spectra Commercial Song: Music & Lyrics

May 2, 2009 by Mike Leave a Comment

The Kia Spectra commercial song has completely conquered me, running through my head whether I’m bummed or psyched. The car commercial is only 30 seconds long, there’s only one verse, and yet, I couldn’t help but wonder: what is the song played in the Kia commercial, and who sings it?  (Answer: it’s called “Can’t Get It Right” by Joe Purdy from his album You Can Tell Georgia.)

A song like this reminds me of the beauty of simplicity. As well as the “hook” value of repetition. The song’s first verse (which is all that’s in the Kia commercial lyrics) does just that:

I just can’t seem to get it right today
I just can’t seem to get it right today
I just can’t seem to get it right today
I guess I’m gonna give up
Oooh, I guess I’m gonna give up

It’s a nice eye-opener,  especially since I’ve been obsessing and over-thinking my two most recent songs, which I’m on the verge of releasing…several months late.  (The song itself also echoes my exact feeling when I’m frustrated with a song…fortunately, it’s a cheerful echo.)

Kia commercial music choices have stood out in other commercials as well, such as with the Kia Soul and Kia Sportage, but nothing has taken off like this ditty.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out here (or just listen to the full track at Last.fm):

McDonalds Filet O Fish Commercial: Song & Lyrics

April 6, 2009 by Mike Leave a Comment

The new McDonalds Filet O Fish Commercial may be one of the most impressive lyrical and musical creations of the year.  The filet o fish song itself is genius…possibly worthy of an eventual “filet o fish ringtone”.

If you haven’t experienced the musical myth, the lyrical legend that is the filet of fish commercial, then you need to check this immediately:

McDonalds Filet o Fish Commercial:

McDonalds Filet of Fish Commercial Lyrics:

For those of you who want to sing along, but can’t understand the talking-wall-fish, here are the filet-o-fish lyrics:

Give me back that filet o fish
Give me that fish
Give me back that filet o fish
Give me that fish

What if it were you
Hanging up on this wall?
If it were you in that sandwich
You wouldn’t be laughing at all!

Songwriters take note — it’s a new age of commercial jingles, it is. Speaking of which, for those that are curious, Pulse Music is the music house that created the song for the commercial.

Secret Millionaire: Good Fox Reality Show

December 3, 2008 by Mike Leave a Comment

secret millionaireAny reality show that makes you want to win the lottery so you can immediately give it away can’t be all bad.

Secret Millionaire, Fox’s new reality show, did that for me.  It’s great to see TV glorifying volunteerism, charity, and good works.  In a nutshell, millionaires live in decrepit neighborhoods, experience poverty, meet amazing people, and give away at least $100,000 of their own cash to deserving folks.  (It’s actually based on the UK show The Secret Millionaire which first aired in 2006.)

For me, the show was an awesome reminder of the many, many things I should be thankful for, the many ways in which we can all help others, and the importance of face-to-face human connections.  Hopefully, it’s achieved that for a lot of other people as well.  Speaking of which, I genuinely hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Get Pumped for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

November 26, 2008 by Mike Leave a Comment

As Turkey Day approaches, you really can’t beat cuddling up to a YouTube-powered PC monitor with a bowl full of gelatin cranberry sauce and stuffing to watch like A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.  The great jazz music combined with pisspoor voiceover work are simply timeless.

If you still feel like you’re not quite ready for Thanksgiving, or are still stressed by playing catch-up at work in preparation for the long weekend, then feel free to get turkey-fied and unwind with the Chuck, the ever-hopeful fieldgoal-kicking whiz kid we all love to feel sorry for..  Happy Thanksgiving, Charlie Brown:

  • David Muhlenfeld = Songwriter behind all the jingles.  (Interview here)
  • Eric Violette = Free Credit Report dot com Guy
  • The Martin Agency = Ad Agency that created the commercials
  • FreeCreditReport.com = is not totally free.  According to the website:

“When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in Triple Advantage Credit Monitoring. If you don’t cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period**, you will be billed $14.95 for each month that you continue your membership.”

Doesn’t hurt to try, I suppose. At least the jingles make me bop my head up and down…

UPDATE: GREAT NEWS! At long last, after many requests, mp3 downloads are now included for all the song! (Courtesy of the Free Credit Report Band video contest.) Speaking of which, don’t forget to download mp3s of my songs on my music page!

VH1 I Want to Work for Diddy = Hip Hop Apprentice

July 27, 2008 by Mike Leave a Comment

So, I’m watching a teaser for VH1’s I Want to Work for Diddy, where a cast of random "can do" "A" personality type folks will compete to be used and abused by the media mogul himself.  It’s sort of like a "Hip Hop Apprentice".

Apparently, the reality show formula has worked wonders for his label, Bad Boy Records, especially for the launch of Danity Kane, Day 26, and Donnie J.  The new show will give him the opportunity to pack in tons of product placement opportunities for his other brands and those of partners’…much like Trump did.

We here in the blogosphere accomplish some amazing things on shoe string budgets while leveraging web 2.0 goodness.  But you still can’t underestimate the power of smart marketing and several gazillion dollars…

MTV "Rock the Cradle": Cast of Rockstar Offspring

March 18, 2008 by Mike Leave a Comment

MTV's Rock the CradleScrew American Idol and Making the Band cinderella stories.  Wouldn’t we all like to watch a show about the rich ‘n’ famous spawn of rockstars getting a chance to become…er…more rich and famous?

MTV’s "Rock The Cradle" knows what we’re talkin about.  Nine children of 9 different musician-stars will compete in American Idol-like fashion for the Rock the Cradle crown.  (While the concept annoys me, I suppose you can’t blame any musician for jumping on a chance to launch a career.  And at least it’s better TV than MTV’s That’s Amore.)  The show is being produced jointly by MTV and by Fremantle Media, which is responsible for American Idol…hence the deja vu you might be experiencing.

Introducing the Rock the Cradle Cast:

  • Jesse Blaze Snider, son of Dee Snider of Twisted Sister
  • Lara Johnston, daughter of Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers
  • A’keiba Burrell-Hammer, M.C. Hammer’s daughter
  • Landon Brown, son of Bobby Brown
  • Lil Al B Sure, R&B singer Al B Sure’s son
  • Crosby Loggins, Kenny Loggin’s son
  • Jesse Money, daughter of rocker Eddie Money
  • Chloe Rose Lattanzi, Olivia Newton John’s daughter
  • Lucy Walsh, daughter of the Eagles‘ Joe Walsh

My next question is, will the cast only be allowed to sing songs by their moms and dads?  Or disallowed?  You’d think Lucy Walsh would be sick of Hotel California by now.  "Oh dad, please, don’t sing THAT song again…"  Will there be a parent-child duet opportunity?  Leave it to MTV to fully milk that celebrity nector…  I’ve got dibs on Jesse Snider to be the Rock the Cradle winner, just ’cause he’s related to Dee Snider.

Be sure to tune in to confirm what we all know — it’s a lot easier to get fame when you’ve already got some to work with.  Rock The Cradle premieres on April 3rd on MTV.  Pop some kettle corn, whip out your favorite 80s album from the star list, and enjoy.  2 Legit 2 Quit, baby.
