Nine Inch Nails Mixes It Up With GarageBand Track

NIN Offers Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails generated a ton of buzz by offering a free download of their single “The Hand That Feeds” in GarageBand format. In the ReadMe file, Trent explains: “For quite some time I’ve been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what’s there.”

Apple users are psyched; PC users aren’t quite as fortunate. Luckily, Beatmixed found a torrent file of all the native audio files you can pick up here.

There’s no doubt this is very cool for fans. It’s also a great promotion strategy, similar to that used by artists posting their work on Creative Commons. NIN permits sharing of the remixes, though not for commercial purposes. There are some great comments in Lawrence Lessig’s blog regarding similar efforts made by George Clinton.
